Hello, I am Dr Katie Underwood, Chartered Clinical Psychologist. I have worked within the NHS for nearly 10 years, across a variety of psychological teams providing interventions to individuals, families and teams. Since completing my doctoral training in 2016, I have worked in a Community Mental Health Team, providing psychological assessment and interventions for adults experiencing a wide variety of mental health difficulties. As such, I have offered psychological therapy to individuals experiencing a range of complex mental health difficulties including trauma, emotional dysregulation and mood-related problems. I have also become experienced in tailoring interventions for individuals with autism.

 

My Clinical Interests

Within my role, I have been trained in several therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness and narrative approaches. Since qualifying I have also undertaken additional training in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), CBT for Psychosis and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills. Within my clinical work I draw on various evidence-bases to help select effective treatments, while also tailoring and integrating these to an individual’s needs. My particular area of interest is the impact of trauma across the lifetime, its treatment, and understanding the traumatic root to many mental health difficulties.

 

My Research Interests 

My doctoral thesis focussed on the experience of adults who were young carers for a parent experiencing a psychosis-related difficulty. I am interested in research into parental mental health, psychosis and the clinical application of EMDR.

 

My Professional Registrations

I have Chartered membership with the British Psychological Society and I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). I am also a member of EMDR Association (UK & Ireland).
